Live event videography is completely different than corporate or commercial shoots. The process is different, the equipment is different and the subject is often different.
Here’s a basic rundown on how a live event would go down. First, you have multiple people working. All cameras are on the same side of the room so that the axis isn’t broken. One camera may be more of a closeup, another camera may be a bit wider to give some variety. Optionally there may be a boom or 20 foot jib moving around the room, often covering crowd reactions and roaming shots. (this is very key by the way).
All of this information from the cameras get put right back into the switcher. Often there is a person managing the range of shots and creating a “live feed” that can be sent to multiple projectors.
Either way all of this footage is stored and can be edited into a final piece later. This can be sold in DVD form or put on the web.
You can even do a live shoot that goes to the web too.
Here’s some of the events that can be Shot
- Music Concerts
- Church Services
- Sporting Events
- Press conferences
- TV/ Radio Shows
- Conferences
- Seminars
- Training/ Coaching
Live Event Videographys IS NOT for refined, shot by shot corporate videos. It’s not for piecing together mixed media elements (voice overs, narration, video footage). It’s not for creating short form media. Just live footage.
It’s just for covering every second of the action in an engaging, interesting way (that often covers multiple angles)
Some things to Look Out For:
- Try and get the cameras on the same side with varying focal lengths
- Get lots of shots of the audience and reactions
- Footage can be viewed live from a projector and also edited later
- Look at the event using a still camera and decide the best placing and shots to cover the action
And Finally, When Choosing A Professional
Ask About Cameras, Lighting, Mics, HD vs SD, Editing and Live Mixing
And last of all, set your sights high and go for a great production!
